Chapter 10
It may have been the first of such incidents with one of the girls, but it certainly wasnât the last. Only a week later, Julian was awakened from a dead sleep by a scream at the end of the hall.
This one didnât fade away like the others. This one kept screaming.
With half of his body still caught in slumber, he slapped blindly at the light-switch then forced himself out of bedâstumbling to the door just as a rowdy group made their way up the hall.
Three of them were walking, three of them were laughing. The fourth was covered in blood and being carried in between. She locked eyes with the psychic as they swept pastâdark hair leaving a trail of muddy water on the floor behind her, still screaming at the top of her lungs.
He reached out quickly, catching one of the men by the arm.
âWhat happened?â
It was his second question. Heâd learned by now not to ask if she was all right.
More doors were swinging open, more people venturing forward in that same state of half-consciousness, wondering what all the noise was about. He saw Micah step into the hallway just a few doors down, staring in confusion, a crumpled pillow still tucked under his arm.
The man he grabbed paused mid-step, flashing a feral grin.
âShe tried to escape during the shift change. Made it all the way down to the river.â
...the river?
Julianâs eyes drifted past him, to the woman still thrashing in his arms.
She was soaked from head to toeâhe hadnât noticed that before. Whatever shoes she had been wearing before were lost in the water, and her thin shirt had been torn straight up the back. It was slipping over the front of her shoulders, exposing more and more skin as they jostled her about.
âHang onââ he started to say.
But they were already moving, carrying the poor girl away.
Viktor emerged from his own room a second laterâtaking both of her wrists and throwing her onto the floor in delight. They were in one of the bedrooms, but they didnât bother closing the door behind them. They didnât bother to mask their intentions, either. Two of them were placing bets as the others began kicking herâwith raucous laughterâacross the floor.
Julian froze where he stood, staring in silent horror.
An odd sensation was sweeping over his body, something that felt not unlike the Novocain freeze his wife used when targeting people with her tatù. It started at the base of his skull, fogging his thoughts and disconnecting his limbs as though he was floating. As he watched it drifted lower, tingling his fingers and making it feel as though he no longer needed to breathe.
âStop!â the girl was screaming. âStopâplease!â
He took a step closer, unable to hear past the ringing in his ears.
The rest of the men had already grown bored of the spectacle. Those who hadnât decided to participate had returned to their rooms. He was one of the few who lingeredâa hesitation that those in the bedroom decided to take as mere indecision, an opportunity to invite him to play.
